Brasilia is the capital city of Brazil. The recognition became official on April 21, 1960. In 1956 Juscelino Kubitschek de Olveira [September 12, 1902-August 22, 1976], who was President of Brazil, 1956-1961], ordered the building of Brasilia to fulfill an article in Brazil's constitution. Dating from 1891, the article stated that the capital should be moved from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location within the country. It took 41 months to build Brasilia, from 1956 to 1960

Brasilia is the capital of the Federative Republic of Brazil and head of the Federal District government, [8] being the fourth most populous Brazilian city. [note 1] In the census conducted by IBGE in 2010, its population is 2,562,963 inhabitants [5]. Brasilia also has the second highest GDP per capita of Brazil (40 696.00 dollars) between the capital cities, surpassed only by Victoria (60 592.00 dollars). Inaugurated on 21 April 1960 by the then president Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, Brasilia is the third capital of Brazil, after Salvador and Rio de Janeiro. The transfer of the principal organs of the federal administration for the new capital was progressive, with the move of the headquarters of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Federal.

The urban plan of the capital, known as the "Pilot Plan" was prepared by urban planner Lucio Costa, who, taking advantage of the region's topography, the project has adapted to the lake Paranoá, designed in 1893 by the Mission Cruls. [13] The lake stores 600 million cubic meters of water. Many of the buildings of the Federal Capital were designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer.
