A small dry battery can run a lcd display for over a year, so what does that cost? About a dollar? If on mains supply it will be less than that.
If you are using mains electric or gas connected to a decent cooker, you have far more control over cooking temperature. The heat is usually almost instant, and it is very clean and efficient. An open fire has none of these benefits.
A fuse is designed to 'blow' if the incoming current exceeds its rating. A rectifier circuit will 'clean up' spikes in the mains supply.
