No, New York did not become the biggest city in the US until a few decades after the Revolution. At first, the biggest "city" in the colonies was Boston, first settled in the 1620s and officially organized in 1630. There were a few settlers around the spot later named Philadelphia at about the same time, but the population did not grow significantly until 1681, when William Penn received a charter for the area. He organized the city and his policy of religious tolerance drew many settlers. In 1700, Boston was still the largest city, with 7,000 people.
