The significance is that it shows something of the human spirit. It shows the want to adventure beyond the horizon, to discover new worlds with courage and ingenuity. It holds true for all humanity that if it were not for this quality, civilization would still be based solely in Africa. Something worth noting, the ancient Polynesians we able to find, settle and create seafaring routes between almost every single piece of habitable land in an area that's nearly 16 million square miles of open ocean without the aid of a magnetic compass or gyro, sextant, charts, GPS or anything else commonly used by modern seafarers. All they had were their observations of the world around them and knowledge passed down orally from generation to generation.
