English began to be spoke in Nigeria as far back as the early 1800s, due to the large British naval presence which had been sent there to attempt to halt the slave trade. It became embedded in the country with British colonial control of the region, which began in the late 19th century and ended with Nigerian independence on 1 October 1960.
Because English was the language of the colonial administrators, and of the British technical personnel who directed the development of the country and its educational structures during the colonial period, it became a common language used by many who did not otherwise speak the the same language. Upon independence, English was declared to be an official language of Nigeria.
Most probably from The Royal Niger Company formed in 1866. Also on January 1st, 1901, Nigeria became a British protectorate, part of the British Empire.
Long before that (1700's) slave traders from Britain introduced English.
English became the official language of Nigeria on October 1, 1960, when Nigeria gained its independence from the British. However, English began to be spoke in Nigeria as far back as the early 1800s, due to the large British naval presence which had been sent there to attempt to halt the slave trade.
