English began to be spoke in Nigeria as far back as the early 1800s, due to the large British naval presence which had been sent there to attempt to halt the slave trade. It became embedded in the country with British colonial control of the region, which began in the late 19th century and ended with Nigerian independence on 1 October 1960.

Because English was the language of the colonial administrators, and of the British technical personnel who directed the development of the country and its educational structures during the colonial period, it became a common language used by many who did not otherwise speak the the same language. Upon independence, English was declared to be an official language of Nigeria.

English was introduced into the area in 1885 when England claimed the area as a 'sphere of influence' for trading purposes. In 1900 the area came under the control of the British Government and in 1901 became a Protectorate until 1960 when Independence was granted.
