Yes, 17th July 1917.

They changed it at the height of the war. On the homefront in Britain, there was despisal towards anything that sounded German. German Shepherd's were changed to Alsatians, and the Royal family changed their name from Mountbatten to Windsor, because it sounded too German.

Why did george v adopted the name windsor as the surnamo of royal family?

In 1917, World War I was in full swing. Naturally, the British people did not like Germany. But, the German Royal family mixed quite frequently, so the British Royal family were a branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Many people did not like this as it represented a tie between the two battling countries. So, to show that the British Royals were seperate, King George broke off the Saxe-Gotha family and created his own new house: the House of Windsor. Windsor is a much more British-sounding name, so it made people in England happy.
