Yes, there is a place in WV called Big Ugly...it is an unincorporated town along the Big Ugly River in Lincoln County. From Wiki... Big Ugly Creek is a major tributary of the Guyandotte River in the Harts Creek District of Lincoln County, West Virginia, United States. Big Ugly Creek is a meandering stream stretching nearly 20 miles from Route 119 northeast of Chapmanville in Boone County to where it meets the Guyandotte River at Gill, an extinct railroad town north of Harts in Lincoln County. Big Ugly Creek is also at the southern end of the state's largest mountaintop removal mine, Arch Coal's Hobet 21. The mine stretches nearly 15 miles from near Julian, north of Madison in Boone County to right above the end of Fawn Hollow, which joins Big Ugly, not far from the Big Ugly Community Center Surrounded by Big Ugly Hunting Ground, Big Ugly Creek and even Little Ugly Creek, local partisans say it is neither big nor ugly. They say railroad surveyors found the area rugged and bushy making it "ugly" for clearing lines for surveying. Others say the land was "ugly" and not suitable for farming.

Why was West Virginia founded?

West Virginia was once part of Virginia. When Virginia declared secession from the United States to become part of the Confederacy, the counties in northwestern Virginia voted to secede from Virginia and remain loyal to the United States. That area of Virginia became West Virginia. West Virginia became the 35th U.S. state on June 20, 1863.
