It is an incorrect term to distinguish the rest of Ireland from Northern Ireland. It is not an official name and not even geographically accurate. The most northerly point on the island of Ireland, Malin Head, is in what people refer to as "Southern Ireland". According to the Irish Constitution, the official name is Éire, or in English it is Ireland. It is also referred to as the Republic of Ireland, though that is not an official name. It is an independent country and is not part of the United Kingdom.
