Right now it is a commonwealth of the US. For the longest time the US government has been trying to make PR a state. The people of PR are divided on this. Some are for it and some are against it.

The people of PR are citizens of the US and do not require a passport to come to the US. The same is applied to Americans who wish to travel to PR. PRs' currency is the US dollar.
