No, even Rhode Island is larger in area than New York City, and by population there are 10 other states that are larger than New York City and 39 other states with smaller populations. If New York City were its own state, its population would fall between New Jersey and Virginia.

That would be impossible. New York City is within the state of New York. This would obviously cause New York to be bigger in both population and square miles.
