In the 1945 General Election the people of the United Kingdom voted for a Labour Governement that had camapigned for Socialism in the UK. A great deal of UK industry and utilities were taken into State ownership making the UK essentially a Socialist country.
In the 1980s the government of Margaret Thatcher returned much of the state owned enterprises back to private ownership and developed a free market economy with few government regulations. Today the UK is still a free market economy but with some social elements still in place.
