On April 2, 1513, Juan Ponce DeLeon saw what he thought was a large island and named it 'La Florida' for the Easter festival (festival of flowers).
Florida became a Spanish colony but was controlled by Britain from 1763 to 1783, and then remained in Spanish hands until the Seminole Wars and the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819, which ceded Florida to the US. It became a state in 1845.

∙ 12y agoNot much is known about Florida's pre-history, but we do have written records from the Spanish Written explorer Juan Ponce de León, who arrived in what is today Northeast Florida (around St. Augustine) in 1513. it was he who named the area he discovered "La Florida" (the flowers).
