Typically in Japan, a child goes to a pre-school for 3 years and then enters elementary school. The pre-school is actually optional, but if parents choose to send their kids there, they begin at age 3 or 4. After the 3 years, it's first grade, so they enter elementary school at age 6-7.
It is essential that Japanese people/children learn English because English is the most common language. Not only is it useful for travel but also for business. ___ To answer the actual question that was asked, Japanese kids start learning English very early in elementary school, and will continue to have English lessons (both reading/grammar as well as speaking/understanding) all through high-school.
I would guess 12 - when they start junior high school.

Japanese children get two to four hours of home work after first grade to up to 6 hours in upper secondary.
Try asking the school office people or Japanese teacher if they know of any good Japanese tutors. Often, high school kids or even year seven kids might also be interested in such work.
Many Japanese kids belong to clubs. These can be sports or game playing clubs. They do these activities after school. They also study, do homework, eat, and spend time with their family after school.
Actually im Japanese and I used to go to Japanese high school also. first of all,Japanese high school is strictly. in my case,it was no ear rings,no make up. and also,we have to ware the school uniforms. I didnt like it very much though. and about test, most of Japanese high school put in 3 semesters in each year. then we have 2 big tests each semester. its kinda midterm and final. its deftenely hard. and also we cant chose subjects, its according to each schools' caricuram. Ive took 12 subjects in my final exam. detail is like Japanese, English math, histiry, biorogy, chemistry,p.e's paper test, home economics, conversasion, carculating, old Japanese language, and i don't remember last one;; anyways its very different from American high school. oh,finaly many Japanese kids perticipiate club activity after school. it is so much fun. but actually i am never agree with Japanese educatipnal system. we have to learn everything. it always makes stress for kids. i don't know, but i like American high school is better,im pretty sure.
