About 780 years. A Muslim army invaded Christian Spain in 711 and Islamic Spain lasted until 1492.
The Muslim armies began their conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 711 AD. They were finally expelled in 1492 AD when they lost Granada.
The muslims invaded the Iberian Peninsula in 711 and were finally experlled from their last stronghold, Granada, in 1492.
When they invaded there was no country called Spain. The Iberian Peninsula was made up of small Visigoth kingdoms and principalities. The Muslim advance was halted by a Frankish king named Charles Martel at the battle of Tours in France in 732. So sometime before 732 they had completely occupied the Iberian Peninsula. Almost immediately the Christains began to push back the Muslims. Over a period of 781 years the area governed by the Muslims steadily got smaller as the Christians advanced south. The Granada war began in 1482. When the Muslims finally surrendered in 1492, the Muslims were reduced to governing a small area immediately around Granada. Obviously the part of the Iberian Peninsula governed by the Muslims was fluid and diminished from 732 until they capiulated in 1492.
The time that the Muslims ruled the Iberian Peninsula cannot be defined as precisely as the time, for example, that the Soviet Union "ruled" Poland (1945 to 1989), or the Nazis "ruled" Europe (1939 to 1945).
The Muslims signed the Treaty of Granada with Queen Isabel I of Castile and Leon and her husband King Ferdinand of Aragon.
Please note that Isabel ruled her kingdoms and Ferdinand ruled his kingdom. While they ruled together, they ruled seperately. The 3 kingdoms were not united to form Spain until all 3 kingdoms, Castile, Leon, and Aragon, were inherited by the grandson of Isabel and Ferdinand, Carlos I of Spain in 1516. At that time they became one political entity under a single monarch.
Carlos I, King of Spain, was also Known as Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.
The Muslim armies began their conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 711 AD. They were finally conquered in 1492 AD when they lost Grenada. So, they ruled Spain for around 781 years or around 8 centuries. When Muslims lost control of Spain, both Muslims and Jews were either expelled away by force from the country, or tortured to death and their houses burnt and destroyed, or forced to convert into Christianity.
Islam had control of Spain, all or in part, from 711 to 1492. Muslim influence was finally removed from the nation under the rule of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.

Oh, isn't that just lovely? Spain has such a rich history, with influences from various cultures over the centuries. The Roman aqueducts showcase the engineering marvels of the ancient Romans, while the Muslim mosques reflect the beautiful architecture and artistry of Islamic culture. It's like a beautiful painting with layers of history and diversity coming together to create a unique and vibrant tapestry.
The reason that Spain contains roman aqueducts dates back to 200 BC, when the Roman Empire was expanding. They ruled Spain and they built their aqueduct system in their cities. Muslim mosques in Spain go back to 711 A.D., when the Moors and Berbers spread Islam, led by Tariq ibn-Ziyad. They conquered the territory and started to establish Muslim states in the land, pushing the Christians to the North. The territory was renamed Al-Andalus and many mosques were built as a result of the Muslim settlers. The Christians in the north slowly started to recover the land and, in 1492, the Muslims were pushed out of the land after they lost at Granada, establishing the Kingdom of Spain.
