Far too many in my opinion ! It is currently estimated there are over a million illegal immigrants in the UK - that's 1 in every 60 people of the population ! Now - I have no problem with Immigration - provided people come here through legitimate channels. Sneaking over here in the back of a lorry is not a legitimate way to enter our country !
Besides which - since the vast majority of illegals are from former 'eastern bloc' countries - they have travelled through at least ten other countries to get here ! The only reason they come here, is to take advantage of our welfare system - and contribute nothing to our economy !

there are over 7000 asylum seekers waiting to come into England
UK asylum seekers come from various countries around the world, including Syria, Iran, Iraq, Eritrea, and Sudan. The top countries of origin for asylum seekers in the UK can vary from year to year, depending on factors such as global conflicts and political unrest.
In 2007, 23,430 asylum seekers came to the UK. This data is from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Among all 44 highly industrialized nations USA has the highest number of prospective asylum seekers (83,400), total number of asylum seekers for Europe were 355,500 and Australia and New Zealand had 16,100 applications for asylum. According to Refugee Council of Australia there are a total of 9,37,000 asylum seekers in the world.

Millions !... in legal fees, handouts and travel back to their country of origin when they're caught !
Do not think so. Job seekers benefits are a UK deal, not EU policy?!
Because the UK hands out huge amounts of cash and help to refugees and asylum seekers etc. Also, many people from other countries have a basic knowledge of English which helps them when they get here.
I am not sure about 2006 but in 2004 there were 34,000 arriving. That represented 8.5% of the applicants to the industrialised world.
The amount given to asylum seekers is less than 1% of what is spent on the NHS each year. Individual asylum seekers receive around 70% (£38.96 per week) of income support. They are not entitled to many of the benefits others rely upon, such as disability living allowance. Refugees are entitled to the same level of benefits as UK citizens, since they have proven their right to stay here. However, most of them want to work, and many of them do.
ONLY if they are in imminent danger of being killed in their home country AND they bring a skill that is in short supply in the UK ! Most 'asylum seekers' come to the UK because we have a welfare system that will PAY them for coming here ! They don't come legally, through our immigration system, but choose to hide away in truck, lorries etc. Additionally - since many of them come from eastern Europe - they have travelled though many countries to get here - what's wrong with settling in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy etc etc etc... There is now a MASSIVE refugee 'camp' just outside the port of Calais in France - with TENS OF THOUSANDS of so-called 'refugees' waiting for their chance to sneak across the chanel into the UK, because the French government refuses to do ANYTHING to send these 'illegals' back to where they came from !
