The UK has always been independent. The UK as a single country has only existed since 1801, when it was formed from the union of the separate pre-existing kingdoms/countries of Great Britain and Ireland. Great Britain had existed as a single kingdom since 1707, when it was formed from the union of England and Scotland. The kingdom of England also included Wales, after it was conquered in the 13th Century. England and Scotland are both very old, having existed since before the year 1000. Although at various points during their history, they have been conquered by various foreign kings (mostly from Denmark and Norway) they still maintained their identity as separate kingdoms.
