You could also say that the position of, or location of, Boca Raton is 16 miles in a northerly direction relative to Fort Lauderdale. Just like as your mothers sister is your aunt by relation, so is the position of Boca Raton relative to Fort Lauderdale. Your mother was the starting point of the description of who your aunt is and Fort Lauderdale was the starting point to describe where Boca Raton was.
