Mexico City's climate is much colder than that found on the southern regions due to its considerable elevation of 2,240 meters (7350 ft) above sea level. The "climate region" it is found is known as "tierra templada" (Spanish for temperate land) but is a bit drier than most other places in Mexico.
Northern Mexico is located on the temperate zone, north of the Tropic of Cancer (23.43722°). This means that weather patterns result in northern Mexico being dominated by the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, which have a dry climate with extreme degrees of temperature, from 0 to 50 °C (32 to 120 °F).
Southern Mexico, on the other hand, lies on the subtropical zone, resulting in a moister climate and constant, warm temperatures which depend on the altitude; one instance is Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula with a mean temperature of 27.5 °C (81.5 °F), or Mexico City which lies at the same latitude of Hawaii but has a greater altitude (2250 m or 7380 ft), with a mean temperature of just 16 °C (61 °F).
It has fairly constant temperatures of 21 ºC (70 ºF) throughout the year. This in contrast with the scorching deserts to the north and the tropical areas along the coasts. The area where Mexico City is located -- known as the Mexican Central Plateau -- also has rich volcanic soils, allowing better crop production and increased population densities.
