Texas today is the second largest state in terms of area and population. It has one of the highest population growth rates (third in the country) and also hosts some of the largest cities in the country (most number of cities in one state over a million residents). Historically and politically the state has been part of the Southeast, despite its geographical location in the Southwest. Texas also boasts the second largest economy in the country after California, and has the longest border with Mexico. It also has one of the youngest median ages in the country with 33 years of age. However, Texas is in the lower half of median incomes in the nation, with only about $48,000, $2,000 under the national average. However, Texas seems like it has a very profitable future ahead, and may surpass California as the "#1 state"
