Turkey tried to westernize and modernize in the early 20th century under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to catch up with European nations, improve economic development, and strengthen its military to defend against external threats. Atatürk believed that adopting Western political, social, and economic practices was necessary to secure Turkey's place in the modern world and promote its progress as a nation.
Mustafa Kemal made the following reforms to modernize Turkey while he was a president:separated the laws of Islam from the laws of the nationreplaced the old Muslim calender with the Gregorian calenderabolished religious courts and created a new legal system based on European law as opposed to the previous system based on the Islamic law codegranted women the right to vote and to hold public officelaunched government-funded programs to industrialize Turkey and to spur the economic growthattempted to modernize Turkey by banning the Fez which was of Greek originmarriage was considered civil and not religious and polygamy was abolishedwomen were given the right to vote in all elections
Turkey as we know it today, did not come into being until The Treaty of Lausanne (1923) established the present boundaries of Turkey, except for the disputed region of Alexandretta. Turkey was able to exercise full sovereign rights over its entire territory, except the Dardanelles, which was demilitarized. Turkey was formally proclaimed a republic in Oct 1923, with Kemal (Ataturk) as its first president; he was reelected in 1927, 1931, and 1935. The caliphate was abolished in 1924, and in the same year a constitution was formed that provided for a parliament elected by universal manhood suffrage (extended to women in 1934), and for a cabinet responsible to parliament. However, Kemal governed as a virtual dictator, and his Republican People's party was the only legal party, except for brief periods. During the 14 years of Kemal's rule, Turkey underwent a great transformation, which changed the religious, social, and cultural bases of Turkish society as well as its political and economic structure.
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk sought to westernize Turkey in every manner, He imposed a wide range of reforms that included emancipation of women, the Latin alphabet, freedom of religion, education of the masses and even rules on the type of dress that was acceptable. His rule wasn't gentle, it was effective. ----- Unfortunetely the times that these happened were not times to be gentle. An uneducated, backward population, another world war at the door etc.
Mustafa Kemal became the First President of Turkey from 1923-1938 (when he died) and began to modernize the country in new and innovative ways, making the country more Westernized. Many Turks consider these improvements to have directly led to Turkish success as a country where most of the Islamic World is significantly poorer or sustained only by oil riches. Mustafa was the founder of modern Turkey and the Turkish Republic. He was important because he helped to modernize Turkey so it would fit in with the rest of the world. He wanted to help Turkey and it's citizens be modern by banning the traditional religious wear for both women and men. They were forced to wear clothing just like the rest of the world's. He also came up with a new alphabet that he went around the country and taught to the children in schools.

They are vastly different. Women in Turkey enjoy similar civil right and freedom to women in many European countries. Women can actively take part in education and take part in any jobs, as well as be part of the parliament Women in turkey do not have to wear Burqa's therefore most women in turkey don't wear any religious clothing, and dress freely. Women are allowed to drive. Women can have as many kids as they want. Women can participate in any jobs, women have equal law and social rights as men unlike in Afghanistan where 1 man is equal to 3 women, and Muslim law and rules on women are non-existent. Over all women are far far better off in Turkey and live like any other European women, and equal freedom and civil rights as men do. Afghanistan is a hell hole for women, where everything is the opposite of Turkey.
