The U.S made an agreement with the Hmong people to help them fight the Secret war. The promise was to bring Hmong to America if they help the American in this war. At that time Hmong people were being treated poorly because they were immigrants living in Vietnam and being hated upon by other subgroups. The U.S also contacted the Hmong because the Hmong previously helped the French, which is U.S alliances. The Hmong also knew the secret route and the land really well, this helped the American from knowing where to attack because Vietnam was filled with jungle, and it was difficult to track them. The U.S eventually drew back from the war. They left almost a half population of Hmong people in Vietnam where they scattered in the jungle to escape from genocide from the revenge of the Viets. A few are in refuge camp but are being mistreated, and beaten in Thialand and Laos. The responsibility and promise the U.S made led Hmong people to move to a foreign land, where they undergo oppression as a minority. The new generation today are determined to be known and differentiate themselves from chinese and other eithnic groups because no one knows what they did for the U.S.
The Hmong are in America because of the Vietnam War. Since Laos is right next to Vietnam, the CIA has built their military based on Long Ching and humanitarian based on Sam Tong. There are a lot of Hmong that lived in these two areas, so the American recruited the Hmong to help guard the Ho Chi Minh trail. There was a promise between the General Vang Pao and the Americans, that if the Americans won, they would help provide as much as possible, but if they lost, then they will help find a place for the Hmong to live. This is also the reason why only Hmong in Laos were able to come to America because the promise was only between Americans and the Hmong in Laos.
