It kept them from travelling freely between East and West Berlin (and West Germany). Many people who lived on one side had relatives on the other that they were not allowed to see for years because of it.

East Berlin was heavily affected by the Berlin Wall. To the people it meant that any attempt at escape could no longer happen and that they would not see their relatives for so long. It meant that the Communist East German satellite regime had complete control over them and showed that they really did not have any freedom. Tthey had a bad ecomomy and the East German government would not let them escape, The Wall was guarded by soldiers ready to shoot anyone who tried escaping.

They stayed like this for twenty eight years until Ronald Reagan helped save them by convincing Mikhail Gorbychev to tear it down in 1986.

Nobody could use planes to get out, and nobody could cross over the wall. there were guards with German Shepards and wouldn't let anyone pass. The Berlin wall first started as just a line, then a fence, and then 2 cement things that go across and like i already said had German Shepards with guards. Everyone just had to stay on there side, even though people were starving and bankrupt.

Here is my impression from a visit to Berlin in the spring of 1973: West Berlin was the side occupied by West Germany, Great Britain, and America. Lively night life, bright lights, plenty of new cars, very modern buildings to replace the many destroyed by bombing during WWII. On the other hand, passing through "Checkpoint Charlie" to the East Berlin side on the other side of the wall was a stark contrast. No bright colors, things were dingy or dark. Stores had very little on the shelves. Cars were fewer and older.
