There is no such thing as the 'American flag'

America is a continent divided into two parts. Within those continents are many countries, each with their own flag and identity.

Many people, incorrectly, call the flag of the USA the 'American flag'.

Another point of view:

The term "America" is often used as an abbreviation for "The United States of America." In similar fashion, we usually call the country on the southern border of the USA "Mexico," but the official name of the country is "United Mexican States/Estados Unidos Mexicanos." So the "Mexcian flag" is the flag of the United Mexican States; the "American flag" is the flag of the United States of America. It is therefore not incorrect to call the flag of the United States "the American flag."

It's true that "America" sometimes refers to both North and South America, and there is no flag that represents the entirety of both continents. In the USA, when someone refers to "America," they're talking about the USA far more often than they're talking about North and South America. The exception might be in academic or pedantic conversations.

We declared our independence from England (Great Britain) on July 4th 1776. Ships at sea need a "National Flag" for identification purposes. Prior to our Declaration of Independence we flew the British flags as ships of a British Colony. Since we had ships at sea and were at war with the British our ships needed to fly our own National flag. The flag of the United States of America was first specified by a resolution in the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on June 14th 1777 (13 stars and 13 stripes).
