culture, innovation, politics but the Muslim empire and Greeks (who were great influences in philosophy and medicine on the Muslims and religion and pilitics to the Romans) were also crucial to the inception of civilised Europe. The legacy of Rome is very important even today because we still use some parts of their culture and ideas to make our lives easier and better. One thing that we use is that the language of the Romans (Latin) is one of the primary bases of English. Over half of the words in English have a basis in Latin. Latin also evolved into many Romance languages. One of Rome's most widespread and longest lasting contribution to today's society is their law. Romans were some of the first to recognize certain standards of justice. The believed that laws should be fair and apply equally to all people. The basics of Roman law are still around today in the structures of many legal systems including the USA. Other things that the Romans contributed are great paintings, great sculptures and great literature. Romans also contributed architecture that was not only useful but beautiful as well like the Coliseum. Many large public buildings in the USA include Roman features such as the US Capitol. Roman roads were also great. Some roads built by the Romans are still in use today. Another great contribution by the Romans is the idea of a republic and a senate. Today in the US we have a Congress instead but the Romans contributed greatly to the Democratic style of government. Romans also contributed the Julian calendar and some festivals like Christmas and carnivals. Although Romans did not invent winemaking they did make it a tradition in many areas including many Mediterranean countries.
