New Jersey was divided into two, separately governed, provinces from 1674 to 1702, and these were called East Jersey and West Jersey. There is a link below to an article on East Jersey, and there are more links from there.
1702 it became a English colony when the Duke of York demanded the charters
The land of the New Netherland was granted to James the Duke of York in 1664. He in turn granted land to two of his friends, Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkeley. To grow the colony these two friends offered settlers the opportunity to gain freedom of religion and a representative government. This brought in many Quakers that purchased the land. In 1702 East and West Jersey were formed. Eventually the two would join and become known as New Jersey.
