They used slogans like "Asia for the Asians" and called their new empire the "Greater East-Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere", as if it was organised for mutual prosperity rather than colonial exploitation. These aims were transparently false, however. The Japanese treated the inhabitants of the countries they occupied even worse than the European colonial masters had. It was really just replacing one form of imperialist domination with a worse one - which many people in the occupied countries quickly appreciated.
