It was separated because the leader of Pakistan named Quaid-e-Azam wanted a separate homeland for the Muslims so that they could practice the teachings of Islam. The Muslims could not live together with the hindus because their religion, language, culture, tradition, festival, etc everything was different.

So there was a need for a sepeate homeland for the Muslims.

Indians and Pakistanis lived in a single country for centuries but, soon after decline of British rule, Muslims of India demanded for a separate homeland. The core reason was the Two Nation Theory according to which both Muslims and Hindus are two different nations as their religions, customs, heritage and history are separate. This led to the creation of Pakistan.
