How did Britain gain control of Israel?

The League of Nations granted Britain a Mandate to govern Palestine after the end of the First World War. At this stage, there were no plans for Palestinian independence, and very few Jews living in what was then the Palestinian Mandate.

Israel took control of the territories after mounting a successful counteroffensive against Jordan in the Six-Day War. Long-term occupation of the territories was legitimized under UNSC Resolution 242.
