Wilfred Owen served in the British Army during World War I. He was a part of the Manchester Regiment, 2nd Battalion.

Usually its the number of the soldiers regiment. Mostly northern troops did this. Almost all the soldiers on both sides were volunteers who served in regiments raised by the states. So there was an 18th New York, and an 18th Pennsylvania, and an 18th Maine, for instance.
In early 1863, the governor of Massachusetts called for African American soldiers to volunteer for the new 54th Regiment of Massachusetts. This Black battle unit served the Union well and was involved in two years of battle until the was was over in 1865.

They were judged by the color of their skin. They were often given menial jobs, lower pay, and worked under white officers. They were organized in all-black regiments, and many served for no pay rather than be demeaned by lower pay than whites. A famous regiment that increased black enlistment in the army was the 54th Massachusetts Regiment which showed great bravery.
British units were organized into Brigades. If you can identify the Brigades that was there, then you can find out the regiments that were in that brigade. Each British Reigment had several battalions and they usually served in different areas. (This derived from WW1 when regiments were raised from one local area of Britain and when the regiment suffered in combat the local community was devastated.) Therefore, one specific Regiment might be found in many Brigades. For US regiments, you identify the Infantry Division and that will tell you what regiments were there.
