In 1982, two antennas were installed on top of the Willis Tower in Chicago. These towers were 526 ft. in length. However, in June 2000, the Western antenna was extended to 279 feet, making it taller than the World Trade Center by a mere three feet.
It is currently Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in Chicago, Illinois. Upon its completion, One World Trade Center (also known as Freedom Tower) is expected to surpass Willis Tower as the tallest building in the US (if you count the antenna); however, if you count roof height, Willis Tower would retain its title as the tallest in the United States.
In 2002, the world's highest building was Petronas Towers due to its spires on the top. But if you consider an antenna as a part of the building then it was Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower). But the antenna is not a part of the building, that's why Petronas Towers was the highest building back then. FYI, Willis Tower has 110 living floors and Petronas Towers has 88 living floors.
Willis Tower was created in 1973.
Willis Group Holdings, a London-based insurance broker, consolidated its Chicago area offices to the Sears Tower. As part of the deal, Willis Group Holdings gets to put its own name on the skyscraper.
