John Cabot was an Italian navigator who while under commission of Henry VII of England became the first Europeans since the Vikings to land on the North American coast. In 1497, Cabot left for his first voyage and after traversing a more northerly trek than Christopher Columbus, he made land at (modern day) Newfoundland, Canada.
