American passport holders DO require a visa to go to China for all purposes except: 1. If they are in direct transit within the airport, they possess an onward flight ticket and their flight is within 24 hours 2. They are solely going to Shanghai, arrive at either Pudong or Hongqiao airports and are spending a maximum of 48 hours there. In this case, a free visa-on-arrival may be obtained at passport control. For details, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China If you require a visa, you can obtain one from the Chinese consulate/embassy in your country of residence. Try and apply as early as possible. American passport holders DO require a visa to go to China for all purposes except: 1. Americans pay $130 for tourist visas to China. Leaving Hong Kong or Macau counts as exiting China so if you will be in and out of those areas plan on a multiple-entry visa. Make sure to apply ahead because the process takes some time.
