In 1797 Napoleon was made Commander of the french Army of Italy after his actions in surpressing the royalist uprising in Paris which nearly lead to the destruction of the French Revolution. At the time of Napoleon's promortion northern Italy was under the control of the Austrians who were enemies of the French and had taken advantage of the disray caused by the French revolution and had invaded a large amount of French territory. In his campaign against the Austrian's Napoleon won the battle of Lodi which drove the Austrians out of Lombardi, was defeated at the battle of Caldiero but recovered and won a decisive victory at the battle of the Bridge of Arcole and then forced the Austrians into peace talks in which all of northern Italy was given to the French. Napoleon proceded to subdue the Papal states including Rome, but left the Pope in power in order to avoid creating a power vacuum which could have been exploited by the remaining Italian states, particularly the kingdom of Naples. In 1798 Napoleon left Paris to attack the Middle East in an attempt to cut off British trading routes to India. Whilst he was away due to blunders made by the current French government also known as the directory almost all of Napoleons gains in Italy were lost to the Austrians. In 1799 Napoleon returned to France effectively leaving his army in Egypt and overthrew the directory installing himself as ruler of France. In 1800 Napoleon crossed over the alps and into Italy and after a series of mistakes managing to drive the Austrians back out of Italy. In 1801 the Austrians signed the Treaty of Campo
