Northern continental Portugal contains some of these subtropical rainforests called Laurel forests.The Portuguese island of the Madeira contains the largest Laurel forests on earth, with 2/3 of the island conserved as natural habitat, primarily Laurel rainforest. Portugal contains animals endemic, or unique to it, such as the long-toed pigeon. Mainland Portugal is also a stopping place for migratory birds. Places such as Faro, the southern tip of continental Portugal, receive birds such as Flamingoes, which enjoy the warm, rich waters of Southern Portuguese habitats.
