Suppose hotel H has a Delux room. You want to book that room for the following period:

May-01-2013 to May-05-2013.

First question: During that time the room is available?

If answer is yes, then it is not 100% guarantee that you can book that room. Because there may have some restrictions. Say, that room has following restriction:

"You cannot check out from May-04-2013 to May-06-2013."

Now see your checkout date is May-05-2013 which lies between May-04-2013 and May-06-2013. In this case, you cannot book your reservation. In hotel industry, this situation is described as "Closed to Departure (CTD)".

But if you want to book for the following period:

May-03-2013 to May-08-2013

Then the above restriction will allow you to book the room. It means if you are staying through CTD restricted dates, your booking is very much possible.

I hope it helps! If you have other understanding on "Closed to Departure (CTD)", please let me know.

"Close to Arrival" means guests cannot check in on the selected date. But whoever is there in hotel already, they can stay.
