147 is the highest break but technically a 155 break is possible. Fouls do not contribute towards breaks. However, if an opponent fouls and the player is awarded a free ball which is taken with a black then 15 reds 15 blacks and the 6 colours, will give 155.

A 147 is called a maximum (15 reds, 15 blacks and all 6 colours). However, the actual highest is a 155 break. This is when your opponent fouls and leaves you snookered on all 15 reds. A free ball is called, you can pot any ball on the table (counts as a red) and then the black, that gives 8 followed by all 15 reds, 15 blacks and colours, giving a total of 155. 147 is therefore the 9th highest break, as it is possible to get breaks for all the values from 148 to 155.

15 reds, 15 blacks, 6 colors so, in theory, 36 shots are needed. However, if a true maximum of 155 is meant then there would be an additional 2 shots of the free ball and a black making 38 shots in total.

It is a sequence of shots in which balls are potted. If you pot a ball, you get another shot, until you miss, foul or pot all the balls.

The break can also refer to the first shot in a game of snooker when the triangle of reds is "broken" apart.

The magic number is 147, 15 reds, 15 blacks and then all 6 colours. However, the highest possible break is actually 155, this only occurs if a free ball is left, then the opposing player can play any ball on the table and it counts as a red (one point) if they then potted the black (7 points) they would have eight points and all the balls are still on the table.

In theory a break of 155 is possible with a free ball situation.
