It can have many dice or a small amount of dice but the main dice in there is the d20 (die 20). The other dice are for damage though. But you need to have a certain amount of dice for players and monsters attacks. Example: someone uses a flaming longsword which say does 1d6+2d8+4 that mean you would roll one six sided die, then roll 2 8 sided dice, then add 4 to it then there's the damage that player or monster strikes with. There are three core handbooks which are the monster manual, the dungeon masters manual, and the players handbook. If you want to know which dice to use for attacks the main 2 you need are the Monster Manual, and the Players Handbook. I hope this helped you
Typically, D20s are rolled to decide if you succeed on a task varying from an attack, to trying to sense the motive of who you're talking to.
D4, D6, D8 and D12 on the other hand are usually used for class related things (e.g. how much health you have) and deciding on the damage done (e.g. a medium dagger does 1D4 damage).
In grand terms, the dice determine your fate. In gameplay terms, they decide what happens in a given situation by expressing random chance. While playing, any time something is about to occur and there is a chance for the action to succeed or fail, a dice is rolled. Usually a high roll means the action succeeds, and a low roll means the action fails. The die that is most commonly used for this in D&D is the twenty-sided die, or d20. Rolling a perfect 20 on the d20 means you succeeded spectacularly, while rolling a 1 means you failed miserably. Certain skills and statistics of each character can affect these rolls and improve (or decrease) chances of success. For example, a character might have a +5 to their Intimidate skill, so any time they try to intimidate someone and a d20 is rolled, they will add 5 to that roll.
So in short, the dice are the main mechanic that decides the outcome of events and keeps the game fair for everyone.
A Dungeons and Dragons dice roller is a virtual way of rolling dice during the game play. This can be found on the website "Wizards" and you will have a selection of different dice to choose from.

Dungeons and dragons is a whole rules system, first and foremost for a pen and paper game, so apart from loaded dice it's hard to say. There's also a lot of computer games based on dungeons and dragons, so if it's one of those the question is about, please specify the question.

D and D without combat? No grids and pieces are fine, just have some dice and a sheet of paper. But no combat!
My personal favorite, and the most popular, is D&D. (Dungeons and dragons.) You also need dice.
