Just one country officially uses the word 'The' as part of their country's name, that is The Republic of The Gambia, commonly called The Gambia.
Before I did the research, I was certain that would include The Bahamas, but found that it was only the common name, the country's official name is Commonwealth of the Bahamas. I also believed that The Netherlands was the name of the country, but they simply use Netherlands or Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. A number of others that I was sure that used 'The' before their country's name did not turn out to be fact. A good example is The United States of America.
