So that their soul will be on the afterlife and their tomb will be placed in a good position
Pharaohs were considered gods as well as political leaders. Much resources and social organization were utilized in building amazing large pyramids, which served as tombs for the deceased "gods". Pharaohs were believed to need wealth, slaves, and food for the afterlife, and were buried with what they were believed to need (figurines of slaves were substituted for actual slaves). Religion was central in Ancient Egypt, and determined how people lived their lives--like people today, they hoped to earn a better life in the afterworld through religious principles.
Much preparation around death, they cared deeply about the afterlife. Thus the pharaohs spend their entire reign preparing for their death by building the pyramids and other burial grounds. The Egyptians also had extensive burial traditions and procedures like mummification.
The prevailing theory is that the pyramids were built as tombs (resting places or graves) for the Pharaohs. They are vast pyramid-shaped constructions consisting of large stone blocks, each weighing between two and three tons, with numerous internal passages and artefacts. There is much evidence to suggest that the pyramids may be much, much older than the Pharaohs, but this is often dismissed out of hand by most Egyptologists who wish to preserve historical legacy. Those who have studied the evidence cannot fail to agree that it is compelling, but who wants to rock the boat?
Robbers were interested in the pharaohs tombs because Egyptian pharaohs believed that they would go to the after life so they put everything they owned in there tomb which explains why they are so big.Robbers wanted to break into the pyramids because Egyptian pharaohs had a lot of money, jewels, gold and expensive things. Also they buried cats and servants in the pyramid usually they killed the servants when a pharaoh died because he would need them in the after life. So the robbers wanted to break into the pyramids because they were worth so much money.
They - nor the word that describes them - did not 'stand for' anything special at the time. They were just burial monuments of a limited number of pharaohs. The word 'pyramid' has much later, Greek roots. The Egyptian word for them according to many Egyptologist, just meant 'tomb'. Most pharaohs by the way did not get buried in pyramids. They were buried in the Valley of the Kings, in large tombs hacked out in the mountainside.
No, Tutankhamen was buried alone like most (in not all) other pharaohs. His wife Ankhesenamun was buried in another grave. Both are buried in the Valley of the Kings though. In previous time of Egypt's ancient history, when pharaohs were still buried in pyramids, their wives had much smaller pyramids next to the pharaohs pyramid. Like the great pyramid of Giza (tomb of Khufu) has three minor pyramids at the feet of it, they are tombs of Khufu's wives. In the tomb of Tutankhamen though, there was two fetuses buried with him, which are most probably unborn children of Ankhesenamun and the pharaoh.
Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs wanted such big Pyramids because it was a sign of their power. They wanted everyone to know what they could do. Pharaohs were recognized as Gods in Ancient Egypt. So when they had massive structures the pharaohs wanted them to last for eternity. When they built them they forced everyone to work on them. It was an honor to help build a pyramid. Not only was it forced but only the kings highest members of the family were able to bury the pharaoh. The Pharaohs were buried with gold and all the necessities needed to live in their after life. So pretty much because they can and it shows how powerful they are the more unique and the bigger the higher a pharaoh was believed to be.:)
There was no reward. The builders were not slaves, but there wasn't much reward. The most reward would be food. :)
These pyramids meant a lot to the Egyptians. The pyramids were made for either the king or queens tomb. They wanted them so big and huge to show how great, strong, and powerful they were. The Egyptians did so much for the kings and queens because they believed that in their afterlife they will become one of the great gods or goddesses. That's why in their tomb there is so much gold and riches. The shape of the pyramid shows that it comes to a point at the top which is where the pharaohs sit. The slaves are at the bottom. There is one king/queen that's why there isn't much room on top as bottom. There are more slaves so that's why they are on the bottom and there's more room. Everyone in between are either more or less people. That's what the pyramids mean to the Egyptians. t
it was during the Old Kingdom. after that, they buried the pharaohs in the valley of the kings to make the graves not so obvious, because grave robbers were stealing the valuable stuff the pharaohs were buried with. that did not help much though :)
The ancient Egyptians placed the Pyramids where they were (on the west side of the Nile River) because they believed that the sun setting in the west was a symbol of life's end. They also built life giving temples (birthplaces) in the east as a symbol of life's beginning.
