The name Alcatraz is derived from the Spanish "Alcatraces." In 1775, the Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala was the first to sail into what is now known as San Francisco Bay - his expedition mapped the bay and named one of the three islands Alcatraces. Over time, the name was Anglicized to Alcatraz. While the exact meaning is still debated, Alcatraz is usually defined as meaning "pelican" or "strange bird."
Alcatraz was built on 1853 so Alcatraz would be 157 years old.
The U.S Military and later the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
no one really knows except the person who built it
People lived on Alcatraz long before the federal penitentiary was built. I've been there. It has a whole section filled with amazing plants. People also lived there before and during the time that the prison was there.
The first lighthouse on Alcatraz was opened on June 1, 1854 and operated until it was replaced in 1909. The reason being that the lighthouse was too short to shine over the main prison building. The second lighthouse, 84 feet tall, was then built to replace it.
It was virtually impossible to escape from because of the cold waters of the bay. BTW, Alcatraz prisoners were fed high-fat, high-calorie diets and denied exercise so that they would not be in condition to escape.

Ryan Howard didn't build Alcatraz. Instead, the U.S Military established a fortification on the Island in the 1850's. Later, the Island was taken over in 1933 by the Bureau of Prisons and was converted into a Federal Penitentiary.
The military used to use it as a place to store Civil war prisoners in 1861. Then in 1867 a jailhouse was built. In 1868, it was officially appointed a long-stay prison system.
Alcatraz Island's use as a military prison began as early as December 1859. In November 1933 the Attorney General selected James Aloysius Johnston to be the first warden at U.S. Penitentiary, Alcatraz. He took office as warden on January 2, 1934, at first maintaining his office in San Francisco. On April 5 he moved into the commandant's quarters on the island. On June 19, 1934, 87 years of the U.S. Army on Alcatraz had ended - except for 32 hard-case prisoners, who remained on the island in federal custody, turned over to the Justice Department to become the first penitentiary inmates. The army commandant officially turned Alcatraz over to the new warden on June 20, 1934. On July 1, the Attorney General officially ordered the establishment of the U.S. Penitentiary at Alcatraz Island.
