The name Alcatraz is derived from the Spanish "Alcatraces." In 1775, the Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala was the first to sail into what is now known as San Francisco Bay - his expedition mapped the bay and named one of the three islands Alcatraces. Over time, the name was Anglicized to Alcatraz. While the exact meaning is still debated, Alcatraz is usually defined as meaning "pelican" or "strange bird."

Well, at first it was just a military defence base. Then it turned into a military prison, then a Federal prison. But I assume it was built there because it was an ideal location; and island offered little escape for prisoners, and during its military years they could defend on all sides.

It was put on an island because the nearest land mass was about 3 miles away. That would mean any escaped prisoners would have to swim 3 miles through freezing water to fully escape, however, swimming this would kill you of hypothermia before you could get to shore.

The Spanish explorer, Juan Manuel de Ayala name it Alcatraz, because of the 100's & 100's of Pelicans that lived there. Alcatraz is the Spanish word for Pelican.

It's relative isolation to the mainland and the strong currents that are located in the San Francisco Bay provide a nature deterrent for escapes. In other words, security.

Alcatraz Island's use as a military prison began as early as December 1859. In November 1933 the Attorney General selected James Aloysius Johnston to be the first warden at U.S. Penitentiary, Alcatraz.
