the idea is to replace what we took. So some people and inc. plant one new tree for every one they cut down to keep the population of trees plentiful and to keep whole forests from vanishing all together.

so we have oxygen

It not a must so I don't think that it should be replanted. However it is in our best interest that for each tree cut down one or more should be planted. Trees acts as nature's respiratory system, earth carbon sink or storage system, Through their roots tree bind earth and soil therefore stopping or at least controlling soil erosion. Trees also control water flow both as run off and help during respiration to get moisture back into the atmosphere and of course they also provide the cooling shade we so love here in the tropics. Don't forget trees provides food for our consumption plus food also for insects, and other animals. Sure tree are not the only plants that provide some or all of these benefit but with out tree we would have little much else. I almost forgot trees provides fuel whether for heating or lighting or both.

If all we did was to consume and not replace or manage our sustainable resources such as trees then we would be left with nothing to consume except maybe rocks, barren earth and a dwindling breathable atmosphere. How long could we survive like that?

Yes, because then we will have more oxygen. They only wanna tear it down for my space, but they could plant small trees and let it grow.
