As per Hindu mythology, Baghiratha prayed and wanted the Ganges (Ganga) to be brought to earth to free the souls of his ancestors. However, the force of the Ganges would have been too much for the earth to bear. Hence, it was brought down through the matted locks of Lord Shiva.

Thus, it is believed that bathing in the Ganges at least once in a lifetime frees you of sins.

A civilization that thrive on the banks of this Holy river attributes roots to a religion sanathana which has no beginig or end .Gangothri source of this holy river is a glacier flow through almost northern parts of Indian sub continent with tributaries Yamuna, mystical saraswathi etc. As this river is closely associated with Hindu Mythology despite many things associated with theology still flood the hinter land as no practical dam can be constructed to save the water due to impractical solutions seen the light.Ganges is the lifeline of North India. Given its importance in everyday life, it was granted a status of divinity. Thus, we speak of Mother Ganga (Ganges). It is both a purifier of the mortal coil as well as conveyor of souls. Despite the pollution, Ganges still captures the hearts (and souls) of the Hindu.
