The first European to see the Falls was David Livingstone in November 1855 and he named them after Queen Victoria. The Falls were known to local tribes and called Mosi ai Tunya (in the language of the Losi people) translated as 'the smoke that thunders'. Both names are recognised today and are on the World Heritage List

It is said that David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary discovered water falls on 16 November 1855. Livingstone named his discovery in honour of Queen Victoria as Victoria Water Falls.

Mosi-oa-Tunya-"the smoke that thunders"-continues in common usage as well for Victoria Water Falls.
