When it was way back then, some Chinese people found them and thought it was bad luck, so they destroyed them and buried them.
That may be possible but isn't common. Largely, the statues were crushed by tons of earth over them. Since the supporting structure of the chamber were wooden and rotten through ages, then the ceiling of the chamber collapsed and all the pressure went on those fragile statues.
