Climbing Mount Fuji is very popular not only among Japanese but also foreign tourists, who seem to make up more than a third of all hikers. The peak season for climbing Mount Fuji is during the school vacations which last from around July 20 to the end of August. The peak of the peak is reached during the Obon Week in mid August, when climbers literally have to stand in queues at some passages.

It is thought that the first ascent was in 663 by an anonymous monk.

According to the safety guidance center at Mt. Fuji's main Kawaguchiko Yoshida trail's 6th station, nearly 260,000 climbers were recorded last year (2010) during the 2-month (July-August) climbing season. Counting Mt. Fuji's other 3 climbing routes, plus other months of the year when thousands of more people climb the trails outside of the official climbing season, one can conservatively guesstimate that at least a half-million (500,000) climbers trek up the slopes of Mt. Fuji every year.

The first ascent was in 663 by an anonymous monk. The first ascent by a foreigner was by Sir Rutherford Alcock in September 1860, from the foot of the mountain to the top in eight hours and three hours for the descent.
