Many deaths have occurred in prison and it was believed that those who have died in the prison have haunted the building. Many guards and police officers have reported to have unmistakably seen and hear ghostly apparitions while guarding the building. Alcatraz, the former site of perhaps one of history's most infamous prisons, has long been rumored to be a hotbed of paranormal activity. Like most other supernatural events, hauntings remain a matter of debate and cannot be confirmed or disproven, however those who have visited the island whose walled cellblocks once burgeoned with death, insanity and tragedy have sometimes alleged strange experiences.

As to which specific spectral entities might reside in the old prison, which was well-known for its harsh conditions, again, no one knows for sure but some very significant names in the world of crime did spent time there, including famous Chicago gangster Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly. According to one legend, three prisoners Bernard Coy, Joe Cretzer and Marvin Hubbard who died violently during an escape attempted in which several guards also perished. The utility corridor in which the prisoners died is said by some to be haunted.

Meanwhile, as recently as 2014, two British tourists captured an image that looked like a woman through a cell block window. It is not known who this individual might be.

The prison finally closed in 1963 but remains a tourist attraction.
