There were several newsreels taken at D-Day and at several of the beaches. It would be difficult to identify the soldiers by name who were in those newsreels. However, it might be possible to identify the unit.

For the Americans, the most famous photos taken with a camera was taken at Omaha Beach by Robert Capa. He landed with a rifle company of the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division. He took 106 photos but sadly many of his photos were damaged during transport back to the ship for processing. With some research, you may be able to identify the company he was with and even the LST that he rode to the beach in.

What happened to the pebbles on Omaha beach in Normandy. All the old newsreels show the Americans landing on a pebble beach-today the beach is sand?

I'd suggest they've been taken away by souvenir collectors. Seriously - there were pebbles in some places, none in others, and the beach is several miles long.

What was d-day and why does it play such a part in the allies fate?

D DAY was the day the allies went to recapture france the battle following Dieppe In World War 2 in comparisson to WW1 in a sense dieppe was like the battle of the sommes and dday was like the battle of vimy ridge. Dieppe was a failure and the lessons learned lead to the success of Dday. Dday played an important part in the allies fate because the allies recaptured france who had fell to russia only 6 weeks into war. this marked the last battle in europe in ww2.
