The Corkscrew rollercoaster, Pirate Ship and the Alpine Bob sled ride were the first rides to be opened at Alton Towers.
There was the Corkscrew(Vekoma Corkscrew) wich was taken down in 2008 and the Black Hole,an enclosed coaster. The oldest ride that is there now is the Mine Train

It is called "Alton Towers" because the Alton Towers Resort has "Towers" which I think were built in 1980 when the Resort was first opened and the "Alton" Towers Resort is located in Alton, Stoke-on-Trent.
There are rumours it could be a Intamin Wing Rider like Furius Baco at PortAventura in Spain, or a Gerstlauer Eurofighter like Speed at Oakwood in Pembrokeshire According to the speech on the corkscrews last day the coaster is going to be the first of its kind in the world
Corkscrew is no longer at Alton Towers. it was decommisioned in 2008. There is now Th13teen there, which you need to be between 1.2m and 1.96m to ride. For most other thrill rides the minimum height restriction is 1.4m.
