Prickly pear cacti are natives of the American deserts and not found naturally in the Sahara. Any prickly pear that might be found there had to have been planted by man. They quickly become a noxious invasive species becuase they have no natural enemies to control them.

They are found in South Africa and Lesotho and have been there for centuries. I'm sure other African Countries also has them so is not new in Africa at all as our great grandparents have been eating them in the 1800s
