Queenstown's name was chosen by popular vote in the gold mining days, after the town of the same name in Ireland. Taahuna is the Maori name of the location on the shore of Lake wakatipu where Queenstown was founded.
The Remarkables are the prominent mountain range across the bay from Queenstown. One historian (Roberts) says that the range was named Kawarau by the Maori, after the shrub of the same name growing there, as was the river ouitflow from Lake Wakatipu.
